Description

“La Mariposa”, or the “Butterfly chair”, designed in Buenos Aires in 1938 by Jorge Ferrari Hardoy, along with Antonio Bonet and Juan Kurchan. This classic chair is also known as the “Hardoy chair" or "BKF chair” after its creators.

Hardoy received his degree in architecture from the Universidad de Buenos Aires in 1939. He had lived the previous year in Paris, where he worked with Le Corbusier. One of the most imitated chairs in modern furniture history, the Hardoy Chair was inspired by a wooden folding chair "La Tripolina" dating from 1877 and popular in Europe. The simple leather sling chair design garnered unexpected popularity and attention, and, in 1947, Hans Knoll licensed the design, but discontinued production in 1950.

Best known for his iconic chair design, Hardoy remained an active designer, architect, and city planner until his death. An early example features in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The edition offered here is made in Sweden to the highest standard by leather specialists of 25 years.
